The Shure SE420 is a high end, sound isolating earphone. Based on an updated E5c, the SE420 continues to build on the earlier three models, refining the Shure sound signature and providing a better build. A dual driver design, the SE420 provides better bass response than earlier models. Comes in both white (silver) and black.

I am worried these ear buds will hold up in the long run. I would have expected better quality for the price. I don't understand why all mfg of earbuds don't use the Monster audio flat wire design as this seems more robust and better for durability. However, having said that, the sound quality is very very good. The fit is good and the sound isolation is superb for blocking ambient noise, especially on an airplane when you need to drown out the roar of the engines, a/c, etc...

I keep hearing buds don't have enough bass but these are more than capable of satisfying bass lovers. Chances are you'll be using them with an iPod/MP3 player like me. It's not hard to find an EQ setting that will make these sound like a million bucks for any pair of ears. Their soundstage is amazing with music sounding like it's coming from the center of your head. The three-dimensional instrument placement with some music must be heard to be believed. My "junker" Bose over-the-ear phones come close but not nearly close enough. Those are for my wife and kids, anyway. My previous buds, E2Cs, had a habit of loosening up a bit when worn lying down and required repeated adjustment. Shure's (relatively) new black foam plugs are excellent at staying snug. As for sound isolation, these blow away Bose, and probably everything else out there. The foam seal is so good that only modest volume levels are required to drown out ALL noise on an airplane. Sound leakage from these is minimal, too. I can listen to music in bed and my wife doesn't hear a thing--unless I feel like cranking G'n'R. Looking at these, you wouldn't think Shure could ask such a price. But, they are worth every penny. Just take care as being so small they're more likely to be lost to impact although my E2Cs failed because I used the supplied case and the constant wrapping frayed the wires. The supplied case is nice for coins but get a hard sunglass case or similar storage. I'm not trying to pick on Bose but they're easy to test drive at lots of retailers and every one has reference-quality source material loaded in the kiosk. Ever try to demo buds at a store? I thought so. I've only tried Shures and recommend you read reviews on competitors such as Etymotic and Ultimate Ears before making your purchase. I know one thing, you won't be disappointed.

First off, ill state my ONLY con, PRICE! Although, with the extreme quality of these earbuds, the price is more than justified, but, i still have to complain about it, :D Now, we'll start with first day, UPS drops off a small box... uber-yay! My new earbuds! I open it up to find a small Shure Box, very cool! Inside the cardboard box, is another all black box, which contains all the gear, and is also a very stylish container for it when your not using the earbuds. When i opened that up, i thought, "Wow, they actually look like $400 headphones! What gives!?!" First impressions of the sound isolation... AMAZING. Far better than Bose Quiet Comfort headphones, and any other active sound canceling headphones i've tried. Which that, is a plus and a minus, it keeps you from hearing the world around you, but, it keeps you from hearing the world around you, which is self explanitory, you hear your music and not annoying people... but you dont get to here those who want to talk to you. :D Now, first impressions on the sound, incredible detail and crisp sound. Although, ILL WARN YOU, Bass is not there at first! Dont judge the earbuds sound just yet! They require around 20 hours of break in time as i've heard, so about 20 hours of music playing on then and they will sound uber-amazing. But, with my short bus rides, about 15 minutes each.. hmm, do the math, lots of days before i hit 20 hours. But they still sound amazing! cant wait till they're broken in! First impressions on the cable... Pretty good, a lot thicker than i would have thought, and it seems sturdy, though a little bit stiff. The uppermost cable, where it splits to the earbuds gets thinner, but, that shouldnt be a problem, especialy if your careful. Value, amazing, they are great for the money. Many times better than Bose Over-ear headphones that cost about 130 dollars, which, these buds are a few times more expensive, so, it shows that you definently get what you pay for. Overall, amazing, i would say, go get em! If you value sound just as much as the screen on your snazzy Ipod Touch :) go get these earbuds! Just remember the break in period, so dont judge the bass right away! Breakdown... Pros: Great sound Great fit Amazing sound Isolation Everything else Cons: Break in Price Overall, go get em!

Excellent low end on these bad boys and the high end ain't nothin' to joke about either. The frequency separation is great, no muddy midrange like most headphones. I've heard the full SE line at another retailer and the SE420 is where the price break really adds up. If you're looking for something a little less expensive I'd suggest the SE210. Not as much bass but excellent clarity in the high end, very crisp. These 420's are for the hi-fi junkie.
