Admittedly, left to my own devices I don't actually play my Wii very often -- but I have many fond memories of bringing the system home to play with my little sister over holiday vacations. We even got Mom to play a couple of times.
Nintendo's current-gen console was revolutionary in its time for its embrace of motion control several years before Microsoft and Sony finally caught on with Kinect and PlayStation Move, respectively. It removed much of the "intimidation factor" a game controller can have on people who don't game very often by making control mechanisms as intuitive as moving your own body.
Unfortunately, more "mature" or experienced gamers sometimes hunger for more complex experiences than the Wii tends to provide, primarily eschewing adult themes and sticking to wildly creative and imaginative titles that are nevertheless lacking in a certain mental challenge. Still and all, if you're looking for a fun night with a group of folks whose company you enjoy, the Wii tends to be hard to beat.
