Congratulations to microblogging website Twitter: Today, the rapidly growing social media platform registered its 500 millionth user. Since its launch in 2006, Twitter has experienced explosive growth in part due, in part, to its being embraced by tweet-happy high profile members such as Lady Gaga and President Obama. At its current rate of growth, Twitter will have one billion users sometime next year.
Though Twitter's milestone may sound impressive, it's important to note that only about 1 in every 4 Twitter accounts are active. And social networking king Facebook has about the same number of people — half a billion — active on its site every day.
