Malaysian artist Yi Hong, who goes by the name "Red," prefers creating works of art using something other than conventional brushes and paints. So when she wanted to draw a sepia-colored portrait of Taiwanese singer Jay Chou, she decided to use a medium many of us would associate with breakfast rather than art — a cup of coffee.

mm-630-coffee-art-jay-chou-hong-yi02Using the bottom of a cup as an alternative to a paint brush, the artist took 12 hours marking a canvas with countless coffee stain rings that interconnect to form the finished piece. In a blog post on her website, Red called coffee a challenging medium because she had to find the right blend for every shade. She also had to be extra careful and precise because the stains were permanent.

Back in January of this year, Red finished a project that's just as interesting — a huge portrait of former NBA player Yao Ming painted with a basketball. Seeing as she has created artworks out of ketchup, salt, rocks, and even shirts before, we can't wait to see what other unusual media she decides to use in the future.
