You probably can't count the number of Monopoly flavors out there anymore. But if you want to explore the intersection between physical board and app gaming, Hasbro's new Monopoly variant beckons. Showcased at the Toy Fair 2012 in New York, Monopoly zAPPed relies on an app installed on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to work.
Instead of paper cash you get plastic debit cards with conductive paint technology that you tap on your Apple device whenever you want to perform a transaction. The app adjusts your money or other assets for you, which may take the fun away if you like playing Monopoly for the sake of pretending to be an accountant. The other aspects of gameplay remain the same — you still have to roll the dice and circle the board with your marker. But you can now also play mini-games to get out of jail or when you're challenged by a Chance or a Community Chest card.
Hasbro's Monopoly zAPPed will be available in June for $24.99. But if you want to get a taste of mixed board and app gaming right now, the zAPPed version of The Game of Life is already out for the same price.
