Los Angeles-based artist Kiel Johnson doesn't use metal, glass, stone, or wood to create his sculptures — he uses cardboard. The same stuff you probably passed by in a store one day, and didn't even notice. Johnson has such great talent for transforming heavy-duty paper into art, that his very detailed works can fetch up to an impressive $8,000 each.
Looking at images of his works on his website, it seems he can craft just about anything out of cardboard. Some of his pieces include a DSLR camera, violins, a life-size 8-bit cartoon man, and even a full space suit. Right now, he's working on a miniature city replete with cardboard skyscrapers, shops, houses, and tiny cars. Johnson first started his training as an artist by drawing on paper and sculpting with metal, but he felt like two different people when he did either. He said it was only when he started using cardboard that he felt whole again.
Want to see Johnson's cardboard masterpieces in person? Head over to the TED Conference in California where his artworks will be exhibited from February 27 to March 2. If you can't make it, check out the video above to at least watch him in action.
