What's the best way to ensure nobody messes with your phone or tablet without your permission? The developer of a new Android app called Void Lock believes the answer lies in making people believe that your device's battery is dead. Void Lock adds another layer of security to your device by turning its screen off even when it's actually switched on.
To unlock your phone or tablet from its pseudo-dead state, you need to input a gesture on its touchscreen or press a key combination. For devices without a physical keyboard, you can use the power and volume up and down buttons to create a series of key presses. The developer says that in the event your device is stolen or lost, Void Lock can increase the chances of recovery because your tracking or locator app (if you have any) can't be disabled as it can't even be accessed. Also, if you really don't want anybody else launching your other apps or changing your settings, you can program special gestures or key combinations for those actions, too.
Void Lock is a pretty new app, and judging by the comments on the Android Market, it still needs a lot of bug fixes. Some users report that it isn't working on their devices even if it's designed to run on all Android flavors aside from Ice Cream Sandwich. It also doesn't seem to work properly on gadgets with AMOLED screens yet. The app is promising regardless, and is worth revisiting in the future if you want to wait until it's more stable before you install it. You can get Void Lock for free if you're willing to deal with ads. Alternatively, you can get the ad-free version for $3.99.
