SpaceWed, the Swedish company behind the rings, was inspired by astronauts who brought their spouse's wedding bands with them to space flights. The company sent a pair of wedding rings and a chunk of gold to space on an unmanned spacecraft launch back in May 2011 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's journey into outer space. After spending a few minutes in suborbital space flight, the package was ejected by the rocket, landed back to earth, and was retrieved by a helicopter three hours after launch.
Each ring is engraved with a serial number and comes with a certificate of authenticity as well as a USB drive that contains all the details of the rocket launch. You'll have to contact the company personally if you want to purchase the rings, due to their hefty amount. The company is also considering sending your own rings and jewelry to outer space, though you'd have to get in touch with a representative for more details.
If you're not married, and aren't getting hitched anytime soon, don't feel left out. SpaceWed's also selling 50 $12,000 space rings, which come off as the more expensive option as you're getting only one ring instead of two. These luxury rings were recently launched at the Dubai International Jewellery Week where the company gave away a pair of wedding rings at a raffle draw, bringing the total count for sale down to 49 pairs.
