In an unexpected turn of events, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has resigned. Jobs will hand over the reins to Tim Cook, who became Apple's Chief Operating Officer in 2007. Cook has served as the company's interim CEO during Jobs' previous medical leaves of absence, including the last time Jobs stepped away from his position temporarily in January.
In the letter accompanying his resignation, Jobs made no mention of his health, but stated that he could no longer fill the role of CEO as he once had: "I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come."
After executing Apple's CEO succession plan by appointing Cook, Jobs will remain on as the company's Chairman of the Board in what we can assume will be an advisory capacity.
