Looking for an electric vehicle like the Chevy Volt, but with a bit more bling (and a price tag to match)? You're in luck: Cadillac has just confirmed that it has approved development of a new luxury electric vehicle called the Cadillac ELR.
Although it will use the same powertrain system as the Volt, the ELR will be in a class all its own, exhibiting "the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving," according to Don Butler, vice president of Cadillac's Marketing division. The design began life as the Converj Concept car, and uses a T-shaped lithium ion battery, electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator. When the battery's energy is low, the car automatically switches to an extended-range mode to enable hundreds more miles before charging is required.
The ELR is still in development, so no details on price or availability date have been released yet. However, we assume that it won't be priced for the penny-pinching crowd.
