National Donut Day inspires all-out social media confectionary warfare
It's been a big news day for pastries. Probably unrelated (though you never know!), did you know that today's National Donut Day? If you happen to follow the Twitter or Facebook accounts of donut giants Dunkin' Donuts or Krispy Kreme, then chances are you do. Both companies have been participating in a media blitz to inform their fans of their celebratory offerings in honor of the day. At Dunkin' Donuts, you can get a free donut with any beverage purchase, and at Krispy Kreme, you can get one for free, no purchase necessary.

National Donut Day was started in 1938 by the Salvation Army, and occurs on the first Friday in June. It was originally created as a fund raiser to help the needy during the Great Depression, and to honor the "lassies" of the Salvation Army who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.

Feeling guilty about chowing down on the sugary pastries, which tend to clock in at about 400 calories each? If you're in Illinois, Utah, Texas, Ohio or Michigan, you might want to register for the Tour de Donut, a bike race which is held in those states in mid-June. During the race, riders get 5 minutes knocked off their final time for each donut consumed at 2 pitstops along the course.
