As if we needed another example of how technology and children go hand in hand, a school board in Maine has approved the purchase of nearly 300 iPad 2s for kindergarten students. The kids, ranging from 4 to 6 years old, will utilize Apple's tablet to learn key fundamentals like the alphabet and numbers.
Former Maine Governor Angus King, who made headlines in 2002 by supporting a program to give junior high school students their own laptops, believes the new plan will help keep kids attentive, stating "If they’re bored and looking out the window, you can be Socrates and you’re not going to teach them anything. These devices are engaging.”
But not everyone is convinced the program will work out, and some parents argue that children of kindergarten age simply won't grasp the technology well enough to make it useful. Of course, there are plenty of studies to prove that the exact opposite might be true. All we know for sure is that when we were in kindergarten, the only thing on our minds was where our next Hi-C Ecto Cooler was coming from.
