Activision halts Guitar Hero franchise
Video game industry site Eurogamer reports that several of developer Activision's studios are being hit with severe layoffs, leading to the cancellation of any Guitar Hero projects slated for release this year. While not an outright cancellation of the series itself, the news shows that Activision's attempt to annualize the series is hitting a snag.

The music game genre blew up after the release of the original Guitar Hero, but now there are high-profile competitors like Rock Band, and the profitability of music games has been slipping for several years.

Other games on the chopping block include the DJ Hero franchise, which we explore in our Game of the Week column, as well as the open-world game True Crime: Hong Kong, the next in a series of crime titles that has received a luke-warm response from gamers.
