The NGP is similar to the PSP, but with vastly improved hardware and an emphasis on social and augmented reality gaming. It has front- and back-facing cameras, GPS, and a compass for capturing the player and the world around him or her; Hirai indicated that both could be a part of gameplay. The device is equipped with 3G and Wi-Fi so players can stay connected with their friends, and compete and cooperate online.
The controls are getting a big overhaul, too. The NGP comes with touch-sensitive surfaces on both the front and the back, and best of all, the new device will have two analog sticks, allowing hardcore gamers to play 3D games like first-person shooters the same way they do on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Furthermore, the NGP has gyroscopic motion controls.

Hirai was careful to note that Sony is trying to remain competitive in a world where even our cell phones can handle high-quality 3D games, so the screen measures 5 inches — bigger than the 3.5 inches common for smartphones. The OLED screen has a resolution of 960x544. That's less than the iPhone 4, but much higher-resolution than the old PSP.
Popular PlayStation games that will get NGP versions include Hot Shots Golf, LittleBigPlanet, WipEout, Resistance, and Uncharted. Some non-Sony franchises like Call of Duty will appear on the device, too. Additionally, the NGP will play all the games and apps developed for the newly announced PlayStation Suite platform, and players will be able to socialize with their friends, track achievements, and more with a user interface and social service called LiveArea. Pricing has yet to be announced, but stay tuned!
