Getting Smart About Technology Basics

Technology is constantly changing and getting more advanced and sometimes all of us just need a minute to get back to the basics so we can really understand what we need. Whether it’s understanding the memory you need for your new digital camera or the types of cables you’ll need for your home theater setup, instead of having you navigate through multiple sites just to figure out the essentials of what you need to know, we simplify things to teach you exactly what you need to know about your most essential technology needs.

If you have a ton of questions, you’re new to doing things yourself, just want to try, or seem to find yourself getting lost without knowing what you’ll need or how to get something set up, Basics are the best way to start.

Writing Reviews

First, great! We’d love for you to share your experience with any of the products listed on Tecca. There are countless people out there trying to make the same decision you made (or didn’t make!) for the products you’ve used and your unique perspective is invaluable for their experience.

For each individual product, there is a Rate & Review button on the top of the page that activates an area for you to write a review. Choose a star rating, add a title, review, and let people know who you think the product would or wouldn’t be good for. And just like that, you’ve shared your unique perspective on a product that will help others like you make a decision for themselves or a friend.

Learning About Products

There are thousands upon thousands of products on Tecca available for you to shop for and learn more about in our Products area. For every gadget we have available in our treasure chest of gadgets, we go out in search of find reviews, information, and prices from top rated sellers and tie them up in one convenient place.

If you don’t know exactly what product you’re looking for, but you know the type of product you’re looking for, like Audio and Music Players or Computers, we make it easy for you to learn more about what you’re looking for, find popular products and accessories you might be interested in, and check out the latest news and guides. If you think you have an idea of what you might be looking for, we also have a nifty product finder on those pages to help you sort through the thousands of products to find the product of your dreams.

Buying Products

We've arrived at a magical age where cool new gadgets can fly right from your phone or laptop to your doorstep! (well, almost) It's true -- you can compare prices and buy products from a plethora of retailers using our app and website. Tag-teaming with a number of vendors, we're doing our best to bring you the web's best prices on the products in our library. We're constantly updating our lists to bring you the best prices so that you can find the best deals on whatever gizmo, gadget, or doodad you're looking for.

This sounds good, how do I actually do it?

To find prices for the electronic object of your desire, on our app, you can hit the "Buy" button at the top of a product page or the "More Prices" button on the web. We'll go out and fetch prices from a number of different vendors -- it might take a little bit, but we want to do our best to find you some options to get you to you one step closer to your cuddly new gadget. See a price you like? We'll take you to the site of the retailer of your choice. From that point on, it's just like any online shopping experience, except that you can order products directly from the web or your phone!

Creating Wish Lists

There are "need to haves," and there are "want to haves." Sometimes, the "want to haves" are easy to remember and sometimes, we need some help. Our Wish Lists are here to help you keep track of products you want, and maybe even products you'd like others to know you want.

Every time you're viewing an individual product, you'll have the ability to add it to your wish list by tapping or clicking on the "Wish" button. By adding it, we'll keep track of all the products you want, whether you found it via search, browse, scanning on our mobile app, or any other means.

Scanning Products

Beep! Beeboop! Oh scanning gun, how we've all longingly gazed at you with admiration for your knowledgeable and efficient, yet occasionally menacing, magical red eyeball. With our Scan feature available on our iPhone and Android apps, we're bringing the scanning gun's magic to your hand. We're bringing all of the personal electronics products in our database to your fingertips in just the few seconds it takes to process a scan.

What can I scan?

While we are giving you the power to scan to your heart's delight, with great power comes great responsibility... and some reasonable expectations. So no, you can't scan codes from absolutely everything: fruit, cereal boxes, that fabulous Badgley Mischka, or that giant stuffed Elmo you've been coveting won't fly. But you can scan the barcodes (those vertical black lines with numbers that you see at your local store) for electronic gadgets and other items you might have found or purchased at your local electronics store. Better yet -- use our app to scan products straight from the box or shelf while you're actually in the store.

How do I scan?

After you hit the Scan button, you'll be whisked into our scan screen that will give you some guideposts on scanning. Make sure that you have plenty of light, the code is completely in view, and that you're looking at the code straight on and not at an angle. Putting the code in your camera's view, hold your phone flat and as still as possible as your camera focuses on the image and follow the on-screen directions to capture the code (Take that, scanning gun.).

Every phone's camera has a different "sweet spot" to focus, so be patient with your little device if it's not scanning right away, and try moving it closer or farther away from the code you're trying to capture.

I've scanned, now what?

After a little processing magic, we'll do our best to present you with the product(s) you've scanned. If successful, you'll be able to go directly to the product page, where you can read reviews, claim a product as one that you own, add it to your wish list, or even buy it. If unsuccessful, we might not have your product in our library (yet... it's growing every day!), or it might be a product type we don't yet support (see: Elmo). Give us time -- we're working to make our library as big as the electronic universe you live in every day.

My phone is having trouble scanning. Help!

If you're an Android user, make sure that your code is sitting on a flat surface with plenty of light and that you've experimented with a few different distances from the code to help your camera focus. Every phone model is different, so if you're really having trouble, there's a small chance that your camera might not be able to focus on the codes well enough to capture the image correctly.

If you're an iPhone user, make sure that your phone is either an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4. Unfortunately, the original iPhone and iPhone 3G's cameras weren't set up to handle the level of detail that we need for an accurate scan. We know, it's a bummer, but if you're using the original iPhone or iPhone 3G, you still have a sweet phone that can find products through our search and find tools on our app!
