With any luck, your student will be speaking like a BBC broadcaster by the time he or she is old enough to drive.

Although it may not be educational in the grammar-and-algebra sense, this app’s focus on hot-button middle school issues like bullying, family conflict, and changing friendships makes it worth checking out. The Be Confident in Who You Are app is a 49-page digital adaptation of the first book in the award-winning Middle School Confidential graphic novel series. Aimed at tweens and reluctant readers, the app incorporates music and sound effects to explore the unique challenges of being in middle school.

For kids with an artistic bent, the Brushes app for iPad is worth a look. The painting application has been used to create four covers for The New Yorker, so it has plenty of sophisticated features. Users can create images with up to six layers, which can be rearranged and made more or less transparent. You can also import photos and zoom up to 3,200%. These features apply to the iPad version of Brushes; note that the cheaper version of the app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad is less powerful.
